How to design your bedroom?

This week, I’ll be concentrating on the bedroom.

This is the room where we spend the majority of our time, and I believe you should give it careful consideration. After all, it is the place where you end your day and hopefully wake up refreshed and rested, ready to begin another day. It is the first thing you see when you open your eyes in the morning, and it can set the tone for the rest of your day.

  • What is ideal size of the bed?

I’ll begin with the most obvious piece of furniture, your bed. We typically spend one-third of our lives in bed, and the rest of our activities throughout the day are determined by the quality of our sleep. This is an area where I would advise you to splurge and get the best mattress you can afford.

Again, the larger your room and your wallet can accommodate, the better.

You should choose a bed that is at least 1400mm wide. My friend summarized this as “a larger bed, though more expensive, is still cheaper than divorce.”

And if you simply want to wake up every morning feeling like a king or queen, the answer to the size of your bed is obvious.

  • Layout

In some rooms, the placement of your bed is determined by electrical installations such as plugs, switches, and lighting. This makes it easier to plan the rest of the layout, but it does not limit your ability to be creative.

I would recommend having a side table next to your bed because you will find it very useful. Side tables can match, but they don’t have to, as long as they have similar elements and contribute to the symmetry of your room. The pro tip here is to aim for a side table height that is roughly equal to the height of your mattress. If you want to know more about it, please let us know in the comments.

Lighting is crucial in creating a certain atmosphere in any room. Most people choose identical side table lamps, but feel free to experiment with other lighting options. When it comes to lighting, we have a good example in the BLAK interior Room Guide series.

We also talk about the best light color for your bedroom here.

  • The furniture to include in your bedroom

By now, you may know me as “the bigger, the better,” but in this case, I will follow the principle “less is more,” and by that, I mean the amount of furniture in your room.

If you don’t have a large walk-in closet and struggle with storage, a nice chester would be a great functional addition to your bedroom.

I also discussed clutter removal in Easily avoidable design errors (vol 2) .You will be grateful for reading that article, but to summarize, whatever you no longer use, think about giving it to someone else or getting rid of it. You will save a lot of time and energy by decluttering your life.

Setting the tone for the day

A rug in your bedroom will improve not only the aesthetics of the room by adding layers, but also the tactile experience. Imagine waking up to a chilly morning, leaving your warm bed, and stepping on a soft rug instead of a cold floor or tiles.

There are certain guidelines in the world of interior design regarding the proper size of the rug. And you can see some of them in the picture below.

When it comes to curtains, the same rules apply as in the Formal Living Room article. The distinction would be considering blackout curtains to ensure uninterrupted sleep.

What about that corner?

We always seem to end up with this odd, unfunctional corner in the room. A floor lamp would be a nice addition for some ambient lighting. Reading chairs may go unused because most people read in bed in their bedrooms, and if you choose an armchair, keep in mind that this can sometimes turn into a laundry chair.

We’re also talking about it on our BLAK Interiors YouTube channel. Make sure to pay us a visit, and I’ll see you again in the next blog, where I’ll share some bathroom tips.

Have a wonderful day, and I’ll see you next week!
