Room Guide – Family Room

When designing family room, the most important consideration, is its occupancy throughout the day. Who will use the room, what will it be used for and how to utilize the best layout to accommodate all the activities. You should consider placing it on the same level as the children’s bedrooms if the space will be used for the activities before the bed time. It will save you hustle of having to carry your sleepy little ones up and down the stairs. You should include a comfortable sofa, adequate storage space, and entertainment systems such as a TV and surround sound system.

Let’s face it, animation now days are done at the same level like world class block busters and you would want an entertainment system that will do them justice. Not to mention the fact that if you have young children, you will be watching quite a few of them. Otherwise, this could be your spot to unwind and watch a movie after a long day.

In Room Guide Episode 4, we discuss the appropriate size of the TV and the recommended viewing distance.

Investing in a large, comfortable sofa that can accommodate the entire family, including dogs (if you are an animal lover), will make those movie nights a lot more enjoyable.

Our head designer at BLAK Interiors is a big fan of cloud sofas, calling them the most comfortable sofas on the market. Please see the video on the BLAK YouTube channel where he explains the cloud sofa in greater detail. If you have back problems and believe that this will not help you, he offers an alternative in this video.

Storage space will be very important aspect of this room. When the playtime is over, you want to make this space tidy, put away all the toys and gadgets and get it ready for the next playtime. Deep drawers that are part of TV units are a good example of the storage that is not that obvious and it blends nicely with the rest of your interior.

The family room is all about family. Dedicate an area or a wall to some of the precious memories that will reflect all of the family members’ small achievements.  Pictures of favorite family holidays or framed drawings of your children from significant dates or occasions are some examples. Make this space personal and bring life into it.
